The painting has been praised for its use of light and colour. A single shaft of light illuminates the girl’s face while the rest of the picture is cast in shadow. Vermeer would have also used the glazing technique to add depth and shadow to the skin tones, whilst maintaining a softness in the edges and transitions.

Degas was a big fan of ballet, which is why he is called the artist of ballerinas. Blue Dancers dates back to the late period of Degas’s work, when his vision weakened, and he began to paint in large spots of color, attaching paramount importance to the decorative organization of the surface. Today the painting is in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.

This painting caused a scandal when first exhibited but is now seen as a landmark in the transition from Cubism to Futurism. It defies straightforward interpretation and conventional artistic methods, embodying the restless innovation of the avant-garde.
